The Aurora Summer Open held on June 16th, 2013 attracted 75 players from Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma and one player from Hamburg, Germany who happened to be on a business trip in the Midwest. Despite this day being the Father’s Day we had an almost full tournament with only 7 spots in 3 events left unfilled. We had only 1 player who didn’t show up.

Tournament Improvements

We purchased 2 new black Killerspin MyT10 Club Pro tables identical to the 10 we already had, to replace aging Stiga tables that were no longer up to USATT standards for tournament equipment. We setup these old Stiga tables in the corners of the gym to have additional tables for warmup.
While we still didn’t have fully barriered courts – we could use additional 20 barriers – the 10 new Newgy barriers improved the stray ball situation considerably. The park district replaced all fluorescent lights in the gym which made an noticeable difference in quality of lighting.I would like to thank the following individuals who helped bring and setup the 2 new tables into the gym.

  • Piotr Gralczyk who lent us the truck to bring the tables from the Killerspin warehouse in Elk Grove Village
  • Tom Szacilowski
  • Matthias Stender
  • Adam Koziel
  • the Park District staff member – who let us use the cart.
  • 2 more individuals whose names I didn’t get who helped lift the 600 lbs worth of tables of the pickup truck.

I also would like to extend special thanks to our umpire Jorge Vanegas who collected score sheets from players and determined the winners in the busiest moments of the tournament.
